<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Migraine is a neurological disorder that causes recurrent, moderate to severe headaches, often described as throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Unlike a normal headache, migraine is usually accompanied by additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), and sometimes visual disturbances known as aura.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A migraine attack can last anywhere from 4 hours to 72 hours if left untreated. Some people experience warning signs before the headache begins, such as mood changes, food cravings, neck stiffness, or fatigue.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In women, migraines are particularly common and often linked to hormonal fluctuations. In fact, women are about three times more likely to experience migraines than men, largely due to changes in female hormones.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-1024x1024.x28543.jpeg" alt="What Female Hormones Cause Migraines?" class="wp-image-2706" srcset="https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-300x300.jpeg 300w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-150x150.jpeg 150w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-768x768.jpeg 768w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-146x146.jpeg 146w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-50x50.jpeg 50w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-75x75.jpeg 75w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-85x85.jpeg 85w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines-80x80.jpeg 80w, https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/What-Female-Hormones-Cause-Migraines.jpeg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-pale-pink-color">What Female Hormones Cause Migraines?</mark></strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The primary female hormone responsible for triggering migraines is estrogen. Estrogen plays a vital role in regulating the menstrual cycle and supporting reproductive health. However, fluctuations in estrogen levels—especially a sudden drop—can trigger migraine attacks.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">1. Estrogen and Menstrual Migraines</mark></strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Many women experience migraines just before or during their periods. This is known as menstrual migraine. It happens because estrogen levels drop sharply right before menstruation begins. This sudden hormonal change can activate pain pathways in the brain, leading to migraine attacks.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">2. Pregnancy and Migraines</mark></strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">During pregnancy, estrogen levels rise significantly. Interestingly, many women notice an improvement in migraine symptoms during the second and third trimesters because hormone levels remain stable. However, some may still experience migraines, particularly in early pregnancy when hormones are fluctuating.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">3. Oral Contraceptive Pills</mark></strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Birth control pills alter estrogen and progesterone levels. For some women, these hormonal changes may worsen migraines, especially during the pill-free week when estrogen levels drop. Others may find that their migraines improve with hormonal regulation. The effect varies from person to person.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">4. Perimenopause and Menopause</mark></strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">During perimenopause, estrogen levels fluctuate unpredictably. This instability can increase the frequency and severity of migraines. After menopause, when hormone levels stabilize at a lower level, many women experience a reduction in migraine attacks.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">5. Progesterone</mark></strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Although estrogen is the primary trigger, progesterone also plays a role. The balance between estrogen and progesterone is important. Hormonal imbalance can influence brain chemicals such as serotonin, which is directly involved in migraine development.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In summary, it is not just the presence of female hormones but the fluctuation—especially the drop in estrogen—that triggers migraines in many women.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-pale-pink-color">Female Migraines Treatment in Indore </mark></strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">Conclusion</mark></strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Female hormones, especially estrogen, play a major role in triggering migraines due to their natural fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">While hormonal migraines can be distressing and disruptive, they are manageable with the right medical approach. Understanding the connection between hormones and migraine attacks is the first step toward effective treatment.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color">What are Migraines</mark></strong></h1>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Migraines are more than just bad headaches; they&#8217;re a complex neurological condition characterized by intense, recurring pain, often accompanied by other debilitating symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">These episodes can last for hours or even days, significantly impacting a person&#8217;s quality of life. Understanding the various facets of a migraine is crucial for effective management and treatment.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">While there are many ways to categorize symptoms, a helpful framework for both patients and healthcare providers is often referred to as the <strong>5 C&#8217;s of migraines</strong>.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The &#8220;5 C&#8217;s&#8221; is a mnemonic device used to help recall the main characteristics or key features associated with a typical migraine attack.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Change:</strong> This refers to the <strong>change in sensation or feeling</strong> that often precedes the headache phase, known as the <strong>prodrome</strong> (or pre-headache phase). This can include mood changes, fatigue, food cravings, or neck stiffness. It also encompasses the <strong>aura</strong>—a temporary neurological symptom, often visual, like seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines, that usually occurs just before the pain.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Cranium:</strong> This simply denotes the <strong>location of the pain</strong>, which is usually the <strong>head or cranium</strong>. Migraine pain is often <strong>unilateral</strong> (on one side of the head), though it can sometimes be felt on both sides.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Character:</strong> This describes the <strong>nature or quality of the pain</strong>. Migraine pain is typically <strong>throbbing or pulsating</strong>, and its intensity is often <strong>moderate to severe</strong>, differentiating it from the dull ache of a tension headache.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Cause:</strong> While the exact &#8217;cause&#8217; of a specific attack can be complex, this &#8216;C&#8217; relates to <strong>Triggers</strong>. Identifying personal triggers—such as certain foods, stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, or bright lights—is a cornerstone of migraine prevention and management. Knowing your triggers helps you implement avoidance strategies.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Comorbidities:</strong> This refers to the conditions that often <strong>co-exist</strong> with migraines. The most common comorbidities are <strong>nausea and vomiting</strong>, as well as <strong>photophobia</strong> (extreme sensitivity to light) and <strong>phonophobia</strong> (extreme sensitivity to sound). These accompanying symptoms are essential for a proper diagnosis of migraine.</li>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">While occasional mild headaches are common, you should consult a doctor, particularly a neurologist or headache specialist, if you experience:</p>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Headaches that significantly interfere with your daily life.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Sudden, severe headache (often described as &#8220;the worst headache of your life&#8221;), which could signal a medical emergency.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">A change in the pattern of your headaches.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Headaches accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, seizures, double vision, or weakness in any part of the body.</li>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Understanding the <strong>5 C&#8217;s</strong>—<strong>Change</strong> (prodrome/aura), <strong>Cranium</strong> (location), <strong>Character</strong> (throbbing pain), <strong>Cause</strong> (triggers), and <strong>Comorbidities</strong> (accompanying symptoms)—provides a concise way to grasp the key elements of a migraine.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">By recognizing these characteristics, patients can better communicate their symptoms to healthcare professionals, leading to a more accurate diagnosis and a more effective, personalized treatment plan.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">People usually think that migraines are simply &#8220;bad headaches,&#8221; but those who experience them recognize that in fact they may be accompanied by a variety of neurological symptoms.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">One of those symptoms that has puzzled many is vertigo, that sudden feeling that you, or the space around you, is spinning. But do migraines really cause vertigo?</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Yes, is the answer, and in the following blog, we&#8217;ll talk you through the two conditions and what can be done about it.</strong></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.asianneurocentre.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Can-Migraines-Cause-Vertigo-1024x1024.x28543.jpeg" alt="Can Migraines Cause Vertigo? <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color">What Is Migraine-Associated Vertigo?</mark></strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Migraine-Associated Vertigo (MAV),</strong> also referred to in some places as vestibular migraine, is a type of migraine that has its effects predominantly on balance and orientation in space and less so on causing pain in the head.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Individuals with MAV either do or do not get the typical throbbing pain associated with migraines.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"> Rather, individuals with MAV may experience brief episodes of dizziness, spinning, imbalance, nausea, or motion sickness. Such episodes persist between a few minutes and several hours.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color">Why Do Migraines Trigger Vertigo?</mark></strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The precise mechanism by which migraines trigger vertigo is currently under investigation, but it has to do with the interaction of the brain with the inner ear and nervous system.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In a migraine, chemical and electrical activity in the brain can temporarily alter the way that your inner ear operates, which is in charge of balance.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Blood vessels constrict, nerve pathways become overactive, and sensory processing is interrupted—all of which can result in a bout of vertigo.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In short, your brain gets overloaded and misfires, affecting the signals it sends to your vestibular system (the part responsible for balance and motion sensing).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">Who Is At Risk?</mark></strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Individuals with histories of migraines, motion sickness, and familial histories of vestibular disorders are more susceptible to experiencing migrainous vertigo.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">It is most typically observed in adults between the ages of 30 and 50 years, but may be seen in children and adolescents as well. Women experience it more than men because of the role of hormonal effects.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color">How Is It Diagnosed?</mark></strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">There is no definitive test to diagnose migraine-related vertigo. Diagnosis is typically the exclusion of other causes of dizziness by hearing tests, balance tests, MRI, or CT scans.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Your history of migraines, frequency of episodes of vertigo, and associated symptoms may be questioned by a neurologist or an ENT specialist. Maintaining a symptom diary may be helpful in an accurate diagnosis.</p>
