SYMPTOMS:

There are four main types of diabetic neuropathy

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY – a common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes, but it can also result from injuries, infections and exposure to toxins. Symptoms include pain, a pins-and-needles sensation, numbness and weakness

• Numbness and tingling in the feet or hands.
• Burning, stabbing or shooting pain in affected areas.
• Loss of balance and co-ordination.
• Muscle weakness, especially in the feet.

AUTONOMIC NEUROPATHY – a type of nerve damage that can occur with diabetes. The condition most often affects the legs and feet. For some people, symptoms are mild. For others, symptoms can be painful, debilitating, and even fatal.

• Constipation (hard stools)
• Diarrhoea (loose stools)
• Feeling full after only a few bites (early satiety)
• Nausea after eating.
• Problems controlling bowel movements.
• Swallowing problems.
• Swollen abdomen.
• Vomiting of undigested food.

PROXIMAL NEUROPATHY – Proximal diabetic neuropathy, also known as diabetic amyotrophy, is a complication of diabetes mellitus that affects the nerves that supply the thighs, hips, buttocks and/or lower legs. Proximal diabetic neuropathy is a type of diabetic neuropathy characterized by muscle wasting, weakness, pain, or changes in sensation/numbness of the leg.

• Sudden and sometimes severe pain in your hip, buttock, or thigh.
• Weakness in your legs that makes it difficult to stand from a sitting position.

MONONEUROPATHY (FOCAL NEUROPATHY) damage to a single nerve, which results in loss of movement, sensation, or other function of that nerve.

• Loss of feeling, tingling, burning, muscle weakness, and paralysis.

CAUSES

Uncontrolled high blood sugar damages nerves and interferes with their ability to send signals, leading to diabetic neuropathy. High blood sugar also weakens the walls of the small blood vessels (capillaries) that supply the nerves with oxygen and nutrients.

Treatment includes managing blood sugar and using medication to control symptoms.
