Dr Navin Tiwari was invited by the INDIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION, Indore Branch for delivering a lecture on Management of Orofacial Pain. At this occasion he said specialised pain clinic are now a new hope for patient suffering from intractable pain and in coming era this concept of pain clinic would be a turning point in the management of various pain disorders.
He said the Pain Management Department uses a multi-disciplinary approach in the assessment and diagnosis of patients, resulting in the best treatment plan for each patient. The pain clinic is managed by a team of experts from various fields. This multi – nodal approach uses a combination of drugs, nerve blocks, intradiscal procedures, intramuscular stimulation, psychological counselling, physical therapy and rarely surgery. In his lecture, he said the concept of a pain clinic is based on the conviction to effectively manage difficult pain conditions through well- coordinated efforts of a specialist possessing knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat pain. Chronic pain can lead to depression, anxiety, marital & interpersonal problems, decreased productivity, , isolation, financial burden, dependence, prolonged analgesics usage, behavioural changes and adversely affecting the quality of life.A majority of complex chronic painful states, unresponsive to conventional treatment are being successfully treated at pain clinics. These clinics are specialised areas that are now taking up the role of an essential service as they meet the unmet needs of an existing medical facility.
